A Brief History of the Calendar
A calendar's purpose is to note past and future times, show how many days until a certain event takes place, such as a festival or a harvest event, or to mark how long since something deemed important has occured. We know that the world's earliest calendars were influenced by the environments of the people who created them. In colder regions, the concept of the year was determined by the seasons, more specifically, by the end of the winter solstice. But in warmer regions, where the seasons are less evident, the moon became the basic object of time measurement. |
| Most of the oldest calendars were lunar calendars. These calendars are based on the time period between one new moon phase and the next new moon phase. This time period was called a lunation. However, even in the warmer climates, there are yearly events that pay no attention to the phases of the moon. In some places, it was a rainy season. In Egypt, for example, it was the annual flooding of the Nile River. The calendar had to account for these yearly events as well.
